Protest Rally for Minimum Wage Increase in Landhi Industrial Area: A Struggle for Laborers’ Rights Continues

On 25 August 2023, a splendid trade union and labour rally was held from the Landhi Industrial Area to Dawood Chowrangi to demand the immediate implementation of a notification for an increase in minimum wages. In the rally, workers from many factories participated, including General Tyres, IIL, Merit Packaging, Steel Mills, Yunus Textile, and Rajby large numbers.

Despite two months passing since the recent budget, the Sindh government has not yet issued a notification for an increase in the minimum wage. On the other hand, the prices of all necessities of life, including electricity and petrol, are reaching sky-high levels.In Sindh, the Pakistan Peoples Party is running an ad on TV channels promoting a minimum monthly wage of 35,500PKR (117 USD). However, employers are resistant to increasing worker wages. The participants of the labour rally vowed that until there is an increase in wages, they will continue to spread this struggle in the whole city, including Landhi Korangi. The participants said that the struggle against the management’s continuous attacks on workers will continue until the end of this exploitative system.

During the rally, the participants were chanting slogans vigorously. Upon reaching Dawood Chowrangi, the rally turned into a public meeting where the leaders addressed the workers.

PTUS supports workers’ rally and urges the Pakistan People’s Party-ruled Sindh government to implement the minimum wage.
